For the 24th installment of our Keep Watch Mix series, we bring to you the tropical bass stylings of Portugal’s Buraka Som Sistema. Given the group’s somewhat reclusive nature over the last few years, this mix is a particularly prized addition to our already illustrious collection. Their sabbatical has not been in vain, and if anything, these dudes have developed an even stronger grasp on the scene during that time off.

For those of you who know nothing of this MC/DJ unit, I’m here to alleviate any preconceived notions. First off, the crew is made up of two MCs (Kalaf and Conductor) and two DJ/Producers (Riot and J-Wow) who have been responsible for the ongoing rise of tropical-influenced dance music. Most notably, the crew has been associated with the infusion of broken bass beats into classic Kuduro – the perfect recipe for ass-shaking.

Given the instant notoriety that has been garnered by Moombahton recently, Buraka Som Sistema’s return to the scene couldn’t come at a more perfect time. With their fingers on the pulse of both the past and present, this gang of bass-laden misfits are poised and ready to strike a dancefloor near you.

Those of you already well versed with the group and the tropical dance scene in general probably already know that this Keep Watch Mix is gonna get you dancing – but let me just tell you right now that you have no idea what you’re about to get yourself into… Vibes from every end of the world accented with the crew’s signature Kuduro flex with a touch of bass weight. While shopping in Paris I stumbled upon this little brand that really made me empty my pockets, after a little research I found out they deal with musicians that I have on my iPod; well now, they converted me from other hipster brands. I really like the no collar style, now that i am starting to get my second chin.

Allsaints established in 1994 as a menswear brand wholesaling to the likes of Harvey Nichols, Harrods and Barneys New York and Japan, solidifying a name for itself amongst style conscious shoppers as the first stop for design led fashion that never follows trends. The name refers in part to 60’s TV icon Simon Templar, aka The Saint - and in part to All Saints Road, in Notting Hill, notorious for its artistic and musical associations, especially its links with the Clash.

In 1998 Womenswear was born directly out of the expanding menswear collection of sharp tailoring, fine knits and the signature washed leathers; injecting sexiness into the "boyfriend" wardrobe. On All Saints Day, November 1, 1997, Allsaints opened their first standalone store in Fouberts Place, off Carnaby Street, presenting the complete menswear collection for the first time. The store has now been expanded and completely renovated to reflect the original character of the building and its location. This style now features across all stores, the intention being to create totally different looks for each location, so that Allsaints retains an independent, noncorporate image. From the outset Allsaints has had a long standing history of collaborating with and supporting the music industry; U2, Stereophonics, Kelis, Robbie Williams, and Kings of Leon were amongst the first artists to work with the brand. As a testament to its dedication to music the brand hosts its own underground AllMusic parties throughout the year as a showcase for the ever-emerging stock of British talent.

More than 30 years after the first album, the ‘extremely rare disco masterpiece’ got a follow up, an epic journey into the deepest electronic disco, full of haunting vocals, warped lyrics, twisted yet melodic electronics and crisp disco beats.

In 2004 Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label released an album by Black Devil called Disco Club, a re-issue of a long lost supposedly ‘italo disco’ classic from 1978. Given it’s absurdly ‘modern’ sound many doubted it’s authenticity, some even suggesting that it was a collaboration between Richard James and Luke Vibert.

The real story is stranger still. Although credited to Joachim Sherylee and Junior Claristidge with executive production by Jacky Giordano, the album was actually the work of obscure French producer Bernard Fevre known only for his incredibly rare electronic masterpiece ‘The Strange World of Bernard Fevre’ and the even rarer ‘Earthmessage ‘ as sampled by the Chemical Brothers on ‘Got Glint?’ - from their ‘Surrender’ album (1999)

From 2006 new records have been released by Lo Recordings: innovative music so ahead of its time that Black Devil Disco Club can still be considered as avant-garde.

Black Devil Disco Club is still producing new gems and touring worldwide in the best clubs and festivals.

One thing’s for sure, you will never hear a more unusual or beguiling electronic dance music.

When Google Street View was launched everyone kept telling those urban myths about people suing after they got caught cheating because of the damn Google car. Well since then cheaters have got wise and have moved off the streets and into museums (apparently)… But that’s not safe anymore either because now Google Art Project will catch them there too!

It feels a little dirty to hype anything done by Google but this is genuinely pretty damn cool!

If you’ve always wanted to check out the MoMA in NYC, Uffizi in Florence or the Palace of Versaille in erm… Versaille, but haven’t had the chance, Google Art Project has the solution.

Using their street view technology, Google have hooked up with some of the world’s biggest galleries from around the world to give people the chance to see art as it should be seen. Using the gallery view you can wander around certain exhibitions in each museum (unfortunately the Murakami at the Palace of Versaille isn’t one of them) and check out the art. Once you see something you want to check out in more detail you can go to art view which will give you the background of the piece and will also link you to related YouTube videos.

Logorama is an Oscar winning movie about a police chasing an armed criminal in a version of Los Angeles comprised entirely of corporate logos.

This is a short film that was directed by the French animation collective H5, François Alaux, Hervé de Crécy + Ludovic Houplain. It was presented at the Cannes Film Festival 2009. It opened the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and won a 2010 academy award under the category of animated short.

In this film there are two pieces of licensed music, in the beginning and in the end. All the other music and sound design are original. The opening track (Dean Martin "Good Morning Life") and closing track (The Ink Spots "I don't want to send the world on fire") songs are licensed pre-existing tracks. Directed by Cassiano Prado, the new video for Tiga’s “What You Need” is loosely based on a series of short narrative poems the musician wrote about replacing Canada’s wooded areas with green screens and weird models. Avid Tiga Story Club readers will be able to spot elements from “Livin’, Leafin’ n’ Lovin’”, “How Could You Leaf Me Here to Die” and “It’s Just a 4est 2 U (SoulDenial)”.

With regards to casting, Tiga had originally planned to be as hands-on as his hands would allow. “I had certain types in mind for the characters. I asked the director to show me The Longestshoreman. The Fish-Eating Vegetarian. The Cross-City Skier. He came back with what you actually see in the video. I said, ‘Fine. I’ve got a big softball game to worry about. You figure it out.’”

And figure it out he did, creating a vivid dreamer’s scape that takes the word “surreal” back from inarticulate college dropouts. “The team that worked on this video are a regular ‘Who’s-UNNGH!’ of young creatives,” says Tiga. “I will make sure each of them receives a copy of my album. But they will not be autographed, because I now consider these people my peers. Dream on that.”

"Pop the Glock" is the fourth EP from French/American electro artist Uffie. Pop the Glock was Uffie's first single and an international underground hit. It was originally released in early 2006 by Ed Banger Records on the Pop the Glock/Ready to Uff EP, along with her other groundbreaking single Ready to Uff. The original release gained Uffie attention from the media, fans and critics alike and landed her a record deal with French electro label Ed Banger Records. Architectural photographer Duccio Malagamba has relaunched his website with new images including these of CaixaForum Madrid by architects Herzog & de Meuron

The CaixaForum is located in the heart of the city’s cultural district, facing the Paseo del Prado, in close proximity to the Prado, the Reina Sofia and the Thyssen-Bornemisza museums.
Conceived as an urban magnet, not only for art-lovers but also for the building itself, the architects lifted the building off the ground, in apparent defiance of the laws of gravity, to draw visitors inside.

The museum is housed in a converted 1899 power station, one of the city’s few remaining examples of historically significant industrial architecture, that was acquired by the Caixa Foundation in 2001.
An insignificant gas station was demolished to create a small plaza between the Paseo del Prado and the new CaixaForum. The classified brick walls of the former power station are reminiscences of the early industrial age in Madrid, while the gas station, a purely functional structure, was clearly out of place.
A 24 meter high vertical garden, designed in collaboration with the botanist Patrick Blanc, takes up one wall of the square.

“The only material of the old power station that we could use was the classified brick shell. In order to conceive and insert the new architectural components of the CaixaForum Project, we began with a surgical operation, separating and removing the base and the parts of the building no longer needed. This opened a completely novel and spectacular perspective that simultaneously solved a number of problems posed by the site.
The removal of the base of the building left a covered plaza under the brick shell, which now appears to float above the street level. This sheltered space under the CaixaForum offers its shade to visitors who want to spend time or meet outside and is at the same time the entrance to the Forum itself. Problems such as the narrowness of the surrounding streets, the placement of the main entrance, and the architectural identity of this contemporary art institution could be addressed and solved in a single urbanistic and sculptural gesture.”

The separation of the structure from the ground level created two worlds; one below and the other above the ground. The "underworld" buried beneath the topographically landscaped plaza provides space for a theater/auditorium, service rooms, and several parking spaces. The multi-storied building above ground houses the entrance lobby and galleries, a restaurant and administrative offices.
There is a contrast between the flexible and loft-like character of the exhibition spaces and the spatial complexity of the top floor with its restaurant/bar and the offices.

The new CaixaForum will house expanded programming that includes music, literature, film, and social and educational programs, similar to the mix at its sister center in Barcelona.
The opening show includes 37 works by contemporary artists such as Cindy Sherman, Cornelia Parker, Richard Long, Anselm Kiefer and Georg Baselitz (until April 6, 2008).

Florence and The Machine is the name for Florence Welch and her cast of backing musicians. The band has received a great deal of critical acclaim since their inception and were chosen in 2008 as one of the BBC's 'Sound of 2009' shortlist - an honour previously bestowed on the likes of Amy Winehouse, Duffy and Adele. The 2009 contest was won by Little Boots, aka Victoria Hesketh.

Florence and The Machine: Florence

Florence Welch lives in Camberwell, in South London. She grew up listening to her parents' record collection, which included bands such as The Velvet Underground, Love and The Smiths. At school, her teachers often had to reprimand her for singing in class - something she struggled to stop doing.

Florence has stated in the past that her songs are "stories with consequences and weird morality issues."

The iPad is a tablet computer developed by Apple Inc. Announced on January 27, 2010, it is similar in functionality to the iPhone and iPod touch, running the same operating system (iPhone OS) and almost all of the same applications.
The iPad has a larger 9.7-inch (25 cm) LED backlit multi-touch display with a pixel resolution of 1024x768, 16 to 64 gigabytes (GB) of flash memory, a 1-gigahertz (GHz) Apple A4 processor, Bluetooth 2.1, and a 30-pin dock connector to sync with iTunes and connect wired accessories.
Two models have been announced: one with 802.11n Wi-Fi (available in March 2010 worldwide) and one with Wi-Fi, 3G (which can connect to HSDPA cellular networks), and Assisted GPS (available in April in the U.S. and several other countries). Both models may be purchased with three different memory capacities.
All of the built-in apps on iPad were designed from the ground up to take advantage of the large Multi-Touch screen. And they work in any orientation. So you can do things with these apps that you can’t do on any other device.

The snow-topped mountains of Vancouver and Whistler are reflected in the fluidity of the organic forms of the 23 individual and team podiums that will be used for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
Designed by James Lee and Leo Obstbaum, the podiums are made from wood donated by communities, businesses, individuals and First Nations from across British Columbia.
To be used during the Victory Ceremonies, or medal presentations, the podiums are made from Western red cedar and Douglas fir by newly trained wood workers in Vancouver's inner city.
The podiums range in size from 4.8 metres to 15.3 m in length, 1.7 m to five m in depth and half a metre tall at their highest point ― the spot reserved for gold medalists. The lightest podiums weigh approximately 200 kilograms while others range up to 260 kg. They will be used in 86 Olympic and 64 Paralympic Victory Ceremonies and are easily accessible for all athletes.

The podiums range in size from 4.8 metres to 15.3 m in length, 1.7 m to five m in depth and half a metre tall at their highest point ― the spot reserved for gold medalists. The lightest podiums weigh approximately 200 kilograms while others range up to 260 kg. Contracts signed for House of Culture & Art
Early designs for Zaha Hadid Architects’ winning proposal for the King Abdullah II House of Culture & Art were released yesterday as the design contracts were signed by the Greater Amman Municipality. Hadid and partner Patrik Schumacher have developed another grandiose design which is scheduled to commence construction in early 2012.

The project includes a 1600-seat concert theatre, 400-seat theatre, educational centre, rehearsal rooms, and galleries. Inspired by the ‘uniqely beautiful monument of Petra’, the building is designed as an artificial oasis and sanctuary for contemporary culture.

“Contemporary architecture is striving to emulate nature and imbue architecture with the intricate complexity and elegance of natural forms. In Petra we admire the way the rose-colored mountain walls have been fi ssured, eroded, carved and polished to reveal the strata of sedimentation along the fl uid lines of the fl uvial erosions,” said Hadid. “We are applying the principle of fluid erosion and carving to the mass of the building for the performing arts centre. This principle of erosion is the sole means of articulating the public spaces in the building. There can be no doubt that this inviting design will wash away the threshold anxiety that sometimes is felt in front of monumental cultural buildings. While the erosion creates the public foyer spaces the remaining mass represents the performance spaces.”

A new urban plaza has been created by shifting the building mass, roughly the same as the current building occupying the site, to the east. A wide and open underpass creates a fluid link into the plaza providing both functional and safe passage under vehicular routes and a continuation of the cultural centre’s architecture.

Generous transparency is provided by meandering glazing wrapping horizontally around one corner from ground level to the top of the building. Hadid’s signature sinuous lines dominate the interior and the transition from outside in, right through to the four tiers of the main theatre.

The House is being promoted by The Greater Amman Municipality as the premiere venue for theatre, music and dance performance and education in Jordan.

“38 Million Sharks Killed for Fins Annually, Experts Estimate”

According to wildlife conservationists, much of the trade in sharks’ fins is derived from fins cut from living sharks; this process is called finning. Because shark meat is worth much less, the finless and often still-living sharks are thrown back into the sea to make room on board the ship for more of the valuable fins. When returned to the ocean, the finless sharks, unable to move, either die from suffocation or are consumed by other sharks or animals.

Shark fin soup is a Chinese cuisine delicacy since Ming Dynasty, commonly served as part of a Chinese feast, usually at special occasions such as weddings and banquets as a symbol of wealth and prestige. The “finning” of sharks required to make this soup has been highly controversial. Some have called the practice brutal, and it is also named as a primary contributing factor in the global decline of many shark species. China’s booming economy has resulted in a large increase in demand for shark fins, and this, combined with the importance of this predator in oceanic ecosystems, has exacerbated the problems that the practice perpetuates.

This collage is a protest in an urban surrounding. This part of tiberina is well seen from nearly any angle. It is seen from the surrounding buildings, from the bridge, from the quay, and from any kind of transport which passes by (bus, tram, car, boat) my wonder wall is supposed to be viewed from 2 different angles. The upper angle shows the dead sharks and their fins torn off while the lower angle shows an attacking shark.

Crookers started in 2003 when two DJ’s, nick-named Phra and Bot, met over a shared love of hip hop, house and the emerging skewed, bass heavy sounds pioneered by Switch in the UK and Diplo in the States. “We decided to call ourselves Crookers to describe what we do. To make beats and tracks that are not straight up, that are twisted or crooked.” Though they both grew up listening to a lot of hip hop; Beastie Boys, Tribe Called Quest, Madlib and J Dilla. It’s from these combined influences that Crookers derive their hybrid sound. Being based in Milan, away from London where the bassline scene initially thrived, meant they could hone their own musical identity.

Their first release End 2 End, was released in 2006. But it was with “Love To Edit” in 2007 and Knobbers”, for their current label Southern Fried, when they really made an impact with peers and a burgeoning fan-base. Their rising status was confirmed with over two dozen remixes including club smashes for Dusty Kid (The Cat) and Kid Cudi (Day ‘N Night) and their services have also been called on artists like The Chemical Brothers, U2, Moby and Britney Spears.

After remixing such huge names in pop and rock Crookers have now directly hit up some of their favorite artists to work alongside on their debut album. Aptly titled “Tons Of Friends” the roll call of pals involved is jaw dropping. It includes, Kelis, Will I Am, Soulwax, Major Lazer, RadioClit, Spank Rock, Pitbull, Tim Burgess, Kardinal Offishall and Roisin Murphy. So watch out the Crookers retain their status as dons of the dancefloor, they already have Tons of Friends and they’ll have a whole load more!

Researchers at the Rowland Institute, Harvard, and McGovern Institute for Brain Sciences, MIT, are developing new, biologically-inspired vision systems taking advantage of faster computers. Their goal is to create vision systems for image understanding that can be as accurate as biological systems and more specifically the human visual system. The researchers have developed a new method that allows them to evaluate many different vision systems and quickly determine which are best suited for scene understanding. In a PLoS Computational Biology the researchers show that their method performs better than current state-of-the-art computer vision systems when tested using standard data sets.

CENTR was formed by two Moscow rappers - Alexei «Guf» Dolmatova (formerly known as the Rolex-X) and Принцип (pronounced : Princip). With this lineup they recorded the first demo album titled "Подарок" ("Present"). There were only 13 copies, which were presented to closest of friends on New Year's Eve.
Since 2002, Guf was working on his debut album. In the same year with the song "Свадьба" ("Wedding") began his cooperation with Slim, which at that time was a member of the band called "Дымовая завеса"("smoke screen"). Earlier, there was another addition to ghe band Птаха (pronounced : Ptaha). Co-Founder of CENTR - Principle was cut off from the creation process by the law enforcement authorities. After he was realesed together with CENTR he recorded with 2 tracks called "Железное небо" ("Iron Sky") and "Исповедь" ("Confession"), included in the album "Качели" ("The Swings"), then left the band to pursue his solo career.
In 2007, Guf released a solo album "Город Дорог" ("City of Roads"), which was recognized as one of the best albums of the year in the Russian rap industry.
October 25, 2007 debut album "Качели" ("Swing"), was recognized by listeners. Interest in the album was increased after the success of "Город Дорог" ("City of Roads"), which took place shortly before the release of "Качели" ("Swing").
The band's songs convey messages about the life of different population groups.
September 9, 2008 the group performed in "Day of the Artist" on Channel A-ONE.
In 2008 a second album - "Эфир в Норме", which elaborated on the theme of drugs, Moscow streets and policemen. In their texts, the participants recognized how and what drugs they used (see the slang of drug users). In summer 2009 Guf left the band. He made this clear in his interview. today each member of the band has released a new solo album.

The New Uk Plug By Min-Kyu Choi

The Royal College of Art's graduate show has opened, and this year, the show-stopper was a plug. Min-Kyu Choi impressed every passer by with his neat, apparently market-ready plug that folds down to the width of an Apple MacBook Air. "The MacBook Air is the world's thinnest laptop ever. However, here in the UK, we still use the world's biggest three-pin plug," says Choi.

Choi's plug is just 10mm wide when it is folded. To unfold it, the two live pins swivel 90 degrees, and the plastic surround folds back around the pins so the face of the plug looks the same as a standard UK plug. The idea produced a spin off, too. Choi created a multi-plug adaptor, a compact standard plug sized unit with space for three folded plugs to slot in, as well as one that charges USB devices.

It's so plausible and so obvious a product that it should produce a few red faces; how many more years were we going to attach our palm sized mobiles and wafer thin laptops to an object that's barely been touched since its first design in 1946? Choi picked an everyday product that most other designers find too mundane to dabble with and drastically improved it - exactly the kind of thinking that we should be celebrating right now.

KEY FACTS/

DIMENSION
10.7m (length), 60m (width), Total area = 650m2
The height of the deck above the water varies according to seasonal changes in water levels. Today the deck is approximately 2.6m above the lake at the centre crest and 1.2cm above the lake at the east and west sides. The wavedeck can accommodate up to 1500 people and structurally could hold the weight of a fire truck.

MATERIALS
The deck is made up of 3670 deck boards (3050 short deck boards and 620 long deck boards).
Two types of wood were used to build the deck: Ipe wood, a durable hardwood with an extended life-cycle of 40 years; and gluelam Coastal Yellow cedar, chosen for its water-repellent character.
Ipe wood was also used for the Spadina WaveDeck as well as Waterfront Toronto’s water’s edge improvement projects at York and John Quays. This helps provide a coherency and unified look for the central waterfront.
The steps are large gluelam Coastal Yellow Cedar timbers which were custom milled to accurate radii in order to obtain the playful undulating curves of the deck.
The wavedeck had to be structurally built to withstand the strong wave force of the lake and any ice shifting.

LIGHTING
The deck is lit from below using LED fixtures mounted to the timber structure to illuminate the water and cast a glow from beneath the deck.
The LED lights are highly-efficient with a 20-year life cycle.

BUDGET AND TIMING
The overall project cost (which includes design and construction) is expected to be about $6 million. This is significantly under the original budget estimate for the project.
Total construction costs will be approximately $5.5 million.
Construction began in October 2008 and was completed in less than 8 months, ahead of schedule.
Pile driving and dockwall rehabilitation commenced in November and continued through to January, followed by the installation of fish habitat. The primary steel beams were installed in March. Timber beams were installed in April over a period of two weeks. The timber decking and deck furniture such as railings and benches were installed over a two month period.

ACCESSIBILITY
The wavedeck is wheelchair accessible from all sides and includes a large barrier free zone at the east side of the deck. In addition, an accessible route between the two large swells in the deck leads users down toward the water.

DESIGN & USES
The wavedeck is a uniquely Canadian structure that exists nowhere else in the world. The design of the wavedeck was inspired by the shorelines of Ontario’s great lakes and the Canadian cottage experience. The geometry of the wavedeck’s impressive curves is unprecedented.
The wavedeck is an urban dock that is both a piece of art and a functional gathering space. It is a completely flexible structural space. The stairs act as an informal amphitheatre and the varying heights of the deck allow for different vantage points and ultimately different experiences with the lake.
The form allows people to interpret the space in many different ways – the large open space on the east side can serve as a gathering space during events or as a staging space for buskers and other performers. The steps can be used as seating while the two large swells feature slender stainless steel railings that follow the undulations of the waves in the deck. These railings which curve inward, are designed to differentiate the artistic portions of the deck from the public areas. They also help wandering visitors negotiate the slopes.
The 30 metre backless bench acts as an elegant barrier to the water while also providing seating for users of the space.

CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTOR
Somerville Construction, a privately owned Toronto based firm built both the Simcoe and Spadina WaveDecks and is currently finishing construction at the Rees WaveDeck. Somerville has extensive experience working on the waterfront and other unusual, one-of-a-kind, high-profile projects.

OPERATION OF THE WAVEDECKS
The City of Toronto is the owner of the Simcoe WaveDeck and the Parks Department will provide maintenance and operation of the public space.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
The wavedeck includes the creation of new fish habitat. Riverstone shoals, tree logs and embankments were installed to provide shelter and increased feeding and forging opportunities for lake fish. Aquatic Habitat Toronto, of which Waterfront Toronto is a partner, has won a Public Sector Quality Fair award for the aquatic habitat enhancement work being done on Toronto’s waterfront.

Li Wei (born 1970, Hubei, China) is a contemporary artist from Beijing. His work often depicts him in apparently gravity-defying situations. Wei started off his performance series ‘Mirroring’ and later on took off attention with his ‘Falls’ series which shows the artist with his head and chest embedded into the ground. His work is a mixture of performance art and photography that creates illusions of a sometimes dangerous reality. Li Wei states that these images are not computer montages and works with the help of props such as mirror, metal wires, scaffolding and acrobatics.
